George Floyd’s death is reverberating through the world. His murder has been the catalyst of all deaths due to police brutality. American citizens and people all over world have joined in solidarity to support black people fight injustice and inequality. Organizations all over the world have taken a role by pledging money to support black communities.
- New Balance has announced a donation of 10,000 pairs of shoes to Black organizations in the greater Atlanta area. The donation is done in memory of Ahmaud Arbery, an unarmed Black man who was senselessly murdered while jogging in Glynn County, Georgia, the donation will be made in Arbery’s name.
- Nike, Jordan Brand and Converse pledged $40 million USD to support Black communities over the next four years, and Deckers. The footwear conglomerate that has HOKA ONE ONE, Ugg, Teva and Sanuk under its umbrella has committed $500,000 USD to various social justice organizations.
- Kanye West has contributed a $2 million USD donation in support of the families of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor, each who were killed by police officers in recent months. The donation includes legal fees for the Arbery and Taylor families who are currently seeking justice for the loss of their loved ones. The money will also go towards Black-owned business in his native Chicago currently in crisis given the economic downturn from the pandemic.
- 12 Years A Slave director Steve McQueen is dedicating two movies, announced as part of the Cannes Film Festival lineup, to George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement. The films, titled Mangrove and Lovers Rock, come from the director’s anthology series Small Axe. Originally described as a TV series, the project is now made up of five feature films that stand in for each episode.
